Firearms: How Do I Keep My Home Safe If I Have Children?

January 3rd, 2014

You have surely heard the old adage, “Guns don’t kill people; people kill people.”  Many parents work in the field of law enforcement or have decided to gain a gun permit.  I have never had the desire to own a gun nor do have one in my home; however, I want people to be safe with guns they are going to have one.  The following is a list of five safety measures one can take to maintain that guns are safe and secure:

  • Talk to Kids

Certainly, children have seen firearms even in today’s video games.  Warn you kids that firearms are dangerous, and they should not go near them.

  • Keep Firearms Unloaded

Make sure to keep all guns unloaded and safety locks on.  If in the event that a child gets ahold of the firearm, nothing will occur.

  • Put Guns in a Locked Storage Area

Purchase a fireproof storage lock.  You can buy one a reasonable price at a storage like Walmart or Target.  Make sure you get the locked or keyed box, not the combination box.  Kids are too clever and may figure the combination out.  Put all lock boxes up high in garages or elevated area out of a child’s reach.

  • Separate Ammunition and Lock in Separate Storage Compartment

In case your kids get into your gun box, you should store ammunition in a separate secure locked box.

  • Place Lock Box Keys in a Secure Location

Never leave keys attached on your lock boxes.  In other words, do not make it easy for your keys.

I hope my 5 gun safety tips help you secure your home from your children.  Kids are a blessing, and we want to keep them safe..
